In a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker gets into details about his experience with CBD. Rogan, a cannabis advocate and user, asks Barker if he still smokes weed. That’s when Barker starts talking about why he no longer smokes weed, but has taken up CBD instead.
The story is pretty serious. One night, Barker noticed he was having a lot of trouble breathing. This led to an emergency visit to the hospital, where he was rushed into surgery to have his tonsils removed due to a condition called Barrett’s Esophagus. Barker says his heavy tobacco and cannabis use over the years likely caused him to develop the condition. Barker’s doctor warned him that if he didn’t stop smoking, he could easily develop esophageal cancer. That’s when he stopped smoking entirely and switched to CBD. “I love CBD,” Barker said.
His shift to CBD, it turns out, was not just a replacement for the cannabis he could no longer smoke. He has several conditions for which CBD works wonders. His primary use of CBD is for anxiety and sleep:
I’m one of those people whose mind is racing constantly. I’ll get home from the studio at 1 or 2 and I’m just like, figuring out how long I gotta sleep before I get to wake up my kids to go to school. And I just sit there with my wheels spinning unless I use CBD.
Barker also mentioned that he has to take “triple or quadruple what it says to take on the bottle” in order for it to be effective.

Another reason Barker uses CBD is to treat an incurable chronic pain disorder called Trigeminal Neuralgia. He likely developed the disorder as a result of the impact he endured when a private jet he was riding in crashed just during takeoff in 2008. The condition causes mild to excruciating facial pain that can be triggered from things like brushing your teeth or even chewing.
Rogan: What’s the cause?
Barker: All different things. They thought mine, I maybe got mine from impact, like from my accident. And maybe, a little bit of sparring that I’ve done has triggered it. Also dental—when I get dental work done it triggers it.
Rogan: But the CBD stops it?
Barker: Yeah. CBD and then if it’s REALLY bad there’s this medication called gabapentin. And I feel like that’s kind of been a great way to mask the pain. And once the gabapentin calms the nerve, 24-48 hours it’s gone—if it’s a really bad episode. If it’s not so bad, CBD just keeps it away.
